Two of Sri Lanka’s most talented musicians, Ramya de Livera Perera and Soundarie David Rodrigo will take the stage on two grand pianos on Wednesday, 12 October at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.

Keeping in mind the inexhaustible colors of sound which can vibrate only from the strings of two pianos, together they have carefully compiled a selected choice of pieces for the programme. One of the items, ‘Andalusian Dances’ by Spanish composer Infante conveys through elements of folk song and dance the happiness and joy of the natives. These dances are virtuosic and are known in the concert hall as ‘thrillers.’ Another item is an arrangement of ‘The Maiden and the Nightingale,’ originally written by Granados, featuring ‘The Call of the Bird.’ This composer was inspired by the paintings of Goya when writing the original melody.

The affinity between art and music is evident in this beautiful description of a maiden and a nightingale.

‘Carmen Fantasy,’ another enthralling piece, expresses our inner lives where one can share the joy and fulfillment that only music can elicit. Both artistes are excited about this particular arrangement of the ever-popular opera, ‘Carmen’ by Bizet, as it captures brilliance and color with the usage of the entire range of the keyboard.

Another choice of piece is the gutty ‘Libertango,’ which simply means a liberated tango by Piazolla, an Argentinean composer, this time exuding the emotional qualities of the tango.

One of the highlights for the evening will be the featuring of two young and talented artistes, Tilanka Jayamanne on flute and Shehara Liyanage on vocals who will certainly enhance the ambience, adding variety to the programme.

The proceeds from this entertaining programme will be dedicated to the Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation. Tickets are available at Commons and the Lionel Wendt Theatre and will be held on 12 October at 7 p.m. at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
