Cabinet approval has been given to relocate the Institute of Technology, Moratuwa University at a cost of US$60 million.

Cabinet approved the decision on 10 November and relocating this institute for land at Diyagarna to be handed over for this project.

“Once the project is completed the estimated total annual intake will be 1000 students for NDT in the fields of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Maritime, Chemical, Polymer, Textile Engineering and Information Technology,” the Cabinet paper noted.

Since the total cost of the project is about US $60 million Cabinet approval was granted to seek donor financing from the People's Republic of China.

The National Diploma in Technology (NDT) first commenced at the Ceylon Technical College Maradana in late 1940's. At that time it was known as the Junior Technical Officers (JTO)course. In 1960 this course was transferred to the newly established Institute of Practical Technology, Katubedda, Moratuwa. In 1967 the course was restructured and named as Technician's course. When this Institute became a University in 1972 the name of the course changed to National Diploma in Technology.

The students who pass the NDT have very good employment prospects and they serve as the link between engineers and skilled workers. With further education and training, they can aspire to be engineers themselves. Avenues are provided by the Institution of Engineers for this upward mobility.

NDT course is a three year full time course comprising of two years of Academic work in the university and one year of Industrial Training.
