This year to celebrate its 17th Anniversary, Nihonbashi offers a 17 per cent discount to all diners on 28 June 2012.
Founded by Dharshan Munidasa in 1995, Nihonbashi was created with the intent of bringing the best of Japan to Sri Lanka. In this the restaurant soon succeeded, as it quickly became popular among the resident Japanese community. Since then Nihonbashi has become increasingly popular, not just within Colombo (where the restaurant has expanded to include two further outlets), but also abroad, where the restaurant has garnered international recognition.
Characterised by its private Tatami style rooms, its swaying bamboo and tranquil water features, the ambience at Nihonbashi has played a key role in Nihonbashi’s success, but it is Nihonbashi’s food which has garnered the restaurant international recognition.
Last year Nihonbashi was named the best restaurant in Sri Lanka by the prestigious Miele Guide, the definitive list of the top 500 restaurants in Asia. The authentic Tsukune Nabe (Collagen Soup) in particular was highly recommended. The Tsukune Nabe was also the highlight of a TV Tokyo documentary on Nihonbashi, filmed in late 2011. Other dishes that Nihonbashi is known for include their original Tensabi Temaki hand rolls, and their Shake no Aburi Sushi.
What really sets Nihonbashi’s food apart is its commitment to fresh, local produce. Dharshan says the seafood in Sri Lanka is among the best in the world, and hopes that his food will help to highlight this, and to celebrate the bountiful resources of the island.
Year on year Nihonbashi has gone from strength to strength and this next year it will undoubtedly continue to do so.
