nithya is a newly minted designer brand that reinvents Sri Lanka’s ancient craft of handloom with contemporary elegance. Newly introducing handloom into markets that value stylish and elegant fashion, nithya also produces denim saris, Tartan checks, refreshing acid yellows and earthy browns in handloom fabrics cut into easy, flattering silhouettes.
nithya was launched in 2012 by the young fashion designer Nithya Lamahewa graduating from Northumbria University UK at AOD campus in Colombo. The designer Nithya has an eye for the intricate fabric weaving mastery of traditional weavers and uses her international education in fashion to present it with a never-seen-before contemporary flair. She says that her customers are intelligent, socially-responsible individuals who understand the role of fashion and design in sparking a better tomorrow for planet earth. While dressing Colombo’s best-dressed with chic handlooms, nithya also promotes an ancient craft, helping rural communities to reach improved livelihoods and stay true to their heritage. Working with traditional artisans in the Gampaha Divulapitiya village, nithya pushes the conventional boundaries of the handloom craft, taking into account global-trends and fashion classics.
nithya’s long-term plans are to take Sri Lanka’s handloom sophistication beyond oceans and place it on international catwalks and in doing so show the world that ancients crafts can indeed have new life breathed into them. nithya recently showed at London Fashion Week 2013 IFS and her new collection was at Melaché. “nithya is edgy, chic, trend-driven and contemporary – It’s for the woman who values style that resonates support and empowerment throughout her society.”
Nithya is available at Melaché boutique store at 29/3 Vishaka Pvt Road Colombo 4. For more information call 5867772/3, www.nithyarn.com
