The US Embassy Colombo announced the ‘Open Mic Competitive Poetry Slam – Season XII’ to be held on Thursday, 25 July at the American Center auditorium at # 44, Galle Road, Colombo 3. The event will have two sessions: session 1 – for participants of age 12 and below will start at 3 p.m.; session 2 – for participants age 13 and above will start at 4 p.m.
All winners and runners-up for audience choice are entitled to free life time membership to the American Center Library in Colombo and the American Corners in Kandy and Jaffna. In addition, all performers will also receive an American publication. Listed below are the ground rules to compete in the event;
nAll ages may participate and can read in any local language (English/Sinhala/Tamil);
nThere is no censorship. It is recommended that writers regulate themselves and avoid excessive violence, sexually explicit content and/or language that is degrading to any group of people;
nIt is a poetry slam, Poets may stomp their feet, sing, dance, drum on themselves, whatever, but they may not a) play an instrument, or b) use recorded music. They may do anything with their bodies that they please, but nothing else. All work must be original.
