‘Open Mic Competitive Poetry Slam – Season XXII’ on 28 May

The US Embassy Colombo announced the ‘Open Mic Competitive Poetry Slam – Season XXII’ to be held on Thursday, 28 May at the American Center auditorium at # 44, Galle Road, Colombo 3. The event will have two sessions: Session 1 for participants aged 7 to 12 will start at 3 p.m.; Session 2 for participants age 13 to 20 will start at 4 p.m.

All winners, and runners-up for audience choice are entitled to free life time membership to the American Center Library in Colombo and the American Corners in Kandy and Jaffna. Listed below are the ground rules to compete in the event;

• All work must be original composition by the performer

• All ages may participate and can read in any local language (English/Sinhala/Tamil);

• There is no censorship.  It is recommended that writers regulate themselves and avoid excessive violence, sexually explicit content an/dor language that is degrading to any group of people;

• It is a poetry slam, Poets may stomp their feet, sing, dance, drum on themselves, whatever, but they may not a) play an instrument, or b) use recorded music;
