Travel columnist Ran Ver Perkmoes explains what makes Sri Lanka such a hot spot, lists ‘Five Top Experiences’ in the country
Ceylon Tea has got a boost in the Travel Supplement, ‘Escape’ of a popular West Australian weekend paper, ‘Sunday Times’. Under the title ‘Tea and sympathy’ it describes how travel columnist, Ran Ver Perkmoes “raises a cuppa to Sri Lanka’s beauty and resilience”.
He provides the answer as to what makes Sri Lanka such a hot spot: “Try fabulous breaches, ancient culture, great surfing, wildlife-filled safaris, tasty food, famously refreshing tea and warm, hospital people,” is his advice.
His fascination with Sri Lanka began when he read Paul Theroux’s ‘The Great Railway Bazaar: By Train through Asia’ as a child. A travelogue by the American novelist Paul Theroux, first published in 1975, the book recounts Theroux’s four-month journey by train in 1973 from London through Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia. He had devoted two chapters to Sri Lanka – one titled ‘The Talaimannar Mail’ and the other ‘The 16:25 from Galle to Colombo’.
