The Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan and the Rotary Club of Cinnamon Gardens is presenting the amateur production of Ray Cooney’s ‘It Runs in the Family’ by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. this weekend. The proceeds of this production will go towards the refurbishment and renovation of the Cancer Ward of the CCC house.
Renowned Director Indu Dharmasena, who directed last year’s hit Ray Cooney’s ‘Run for Your Wife’ has taken on directing this production.
Written by master British farceur, Ray Cooney, the plot of ‘It Runs in the Family’ revolves around Dr. Mortimore, a pretentious neurologist who is preparing to present a career-making speech at an important medical conference.
Moments before his scheduled appearance, his former nurse and lover arrives (after “18 years and nine months”) to inform him that their liaison produced a son, an apparently delinquent son who is rampaging through the hospital at that very moment, desperately looking for his father. As Mortimore tries to keep both his marriage and career intact, he turns to progressively more elaborate (and hilarious) deceptions and eventually weaves a web of outrageous lies so convoluted that even he begins to lose its thread.
The cast comprises Indu Dharmasena who plays Dr. David Mortimore, Rehan Amarathunga plays Dr. Mike Connaly, Sanwada Dharmasena plays Rosemary Mortimore, Abbasali Rozais plays Dr. Hubert Bonney, Amaya Wijesinghe plays Matron, Jaliya Wijewardena plays Sir Willoughby Drake, Sulo Perera plays the role of Jane Tate, Manthika Wijewardena plays Sister, Anuk Dharmasena plays Leslie, George Cooke plays Police Sergeant Connally and Anushan Selvarajah plays Bill.
The play runs from 19 to 21 May at the Lionel Wendt. Tickets will be sold at the Wendt. Tickets priced at: Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,800, Rs. 2,500, Rs. 1,500. Balcony (unreserved) Rs.750.
