The popular ‘Rhythm of the Maroons’ a musical phenomenon organised by the Music Circle of Ananda College, will be held on Saturday, 9 November at the Museaus College Auditorium, with the participation of many schools, choirs, dancing troupes and vocalists from all across the island, with such well renowned artists as Nadeeka Guruge, Nelu Adhikari, Heshan Gamage, Kasun Kalhara, Indrachapa Liyanage. Rhythm of the Maroons which carries a legacy over 36 years of excellence, first came to life in 2006 and continues to the present, having added more grandeur with each performance seven consecutive times. Since its inception, the Music Circle has for its object striven new heights, new terrains – and has won them all. Ananda College Music Circle (ACMC), as it is currently known, was established as a society within the College in 1975. This was first known as the ‘Oriental Music Society’, because it gave the initiative to those who were engaged in oriental music. It was because of the efforts of Hemachandra Jayawardana and Bandula Kodikara, two staff members of the school at the time. Unlike most other similarly themed musical shows in the country, Rhythm of the Maroons strives to infuse the best of both worlds. Classical, symphony, pop, fusion – you name it, they’ve got it for all to hear and enjoy. Music, after all, does not follow Kipling’s saying ‘East is East, West is West’. The twain ‘does’ meet. This year, the Music Circle also decided to involve schools from across the island in a very unique singing competition – for the first time in Sri Lanka. ‘VOCALIZE 2013’, which successfully concluded its first round and the second rounds on 20 September and 11 October respectively, both at Kularathna Hall, saw the participation of 30 schools and over 500 competitors, including Lyceum International School, Sirimavo Bandaranayaka Vidyalaya, St. Pauls’ Milagiriya, Vidura College, Anula Vidyalaya, Good Shepherd Convent, Sujatha Vidyalaya and British School in Colombo. The competition’s Grand Finale is to be held alongside Rhythm of the Maroons 2013 on 9 November, at the Peter de Abrew Memorial Auditorium in Museaus College.
