Sri Lanka-India cultures celebrated at SBI Sthree Utsav 2013

A star studded evening infusing the allure of India and the charm of Sri Lanka enthralled guests on 24 November when the SBI – Sthree Utsav 2013 took place at the Crystal Ballroom of the Taj Samudra Hotel. The sounds of Elephant Foot percussion drummers reverberated throughout the ballroom when the Sri Lanka-India Friendship society, the oldest friendship society in the country, hosted SBI Sthree Utsav for the second consecutive year. Deputy High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka Shri P. Kumaran and Shrimathi Ritu Kumaran graced the event as the Chief Guests. Staying true to its theme, a glamorous fashion show by La Robe – the designer boutique based in Cochin showcased custom designed, delicately created and skilfully crafted saris by Rita George. The show was choreographed by Judy Muller. The theme chosen for this year’s event was ‘red’ which added vibrancy and colour to the festivities. A Bollywood dance round with premier Bollywood hits captivated the attention of the crowd as well. Participants also had the chance to win a free air ticket to Chennai among many other exciting prizes during the raffle draw. “An evening of fashion, fusion and glamour SBI Sthree Utsav 2013 stood true to its name in every essence of the word,” Project Chairman of the event T S Prakash said. He is also the Vice President of the Sri Lanka-India Society and General Manager for Revoln. Sri Lanka-India Society President and attorney-at-law Kandiah Neelakandan, Secretary Sampath Serasinghe, Treasurer A. A. M. Illiyas along with a number of other members of the society provided their wholehearted support for the event. The event was sponsored by the State Bank of India which has been serving both communities since 1864, as well as BlueScope Lysaught Lanka and Brandix as co-sponsors along with Revlon. The Sri Lanka India Society is the oldest friendship society in Sri Lanka and is now in its 64th year with a membership exceeding 750. The membership is represented by a mix of both Sri Lankans and Indians. The society is known for holding the Annual India Republic Day Dinner, India Independence Day Dinner, Saathme family get-together and the ‘Piramal Cup’ cricket match between Indian High Commission Officials and Sri Lanka-India Society members.
