Since opening this January, the aptly named ‘The Tailor Shop’ has been winning many a patron through their attention to detail and finesse of design and finish. Owned and managed by a husband and wife team – Managing Director Thabit Samad and Nayomi Mahaegodage – The Tailor Shop is one of a kind in town. Specialising only in gents and ladies suits for now, the shop prides itself in being fully customer oriented. “Our exclusivity comes from customisation. It is 100% according to the customer’s requirements. Everything from the fabric, to the lining and buttons are selected by the customer and most of the stitching is done by hand. The equipment used, like button hole, fusing, bar tag and blind hem machines are state-of-the-art and are imported from Hong Kong and China,” explained Samad. The Tailor Shop presently employs a team of 12 talented designers and tailors, all of whom are professionals with 10 to 30 years of work experience behind them. “Our master cutter, Thompson de Zoysa, has been in the trade for over 30 years. He started his career at the renowned Fairline and has also worked at Voodi and Eeann Orient under the guidance of some of the best known Singaporean tailors to have worked in Sri Lanka.” Thabit further elaborated on why his shop can offer the best in tailoring suits in Sri Lanka. Other than paying focussed attention to customer’s requirements, The Tailor Shop specialises in exclusive Italian fabrics, although they are purchased from Hong Kong – as it is more economical than importing from Italy. While a lower range of fabrics imported from Bangkok are also available, most of The Tailor Shop’s clientele have been seeking only the best. The Tailor Shop’s customers include diplomats, celebrities and professionals all of whom demand Thabit’s personal touch in helping them design the perfect shirt, trouser or suit; and are very popular with grooms who want to look their best on their special day. While the design of the suit is finalised through an extensive interactive process so as to determine the exact needs of the customer, an equally painstaking method of perfection is also employed in tailoring at The Tailor Shop. Every part stitched is ironed first, so that each piece of cloth fits perfectly. The Tailor Shop currently does not design or tailor any dresses for ladies although suits, skirts and pants are catered. However, The Tailor Shop plans to cater to ladies wishing to tailor customised dresses in the future. “We are yet to have a proper opening ceremony for the shop. We were getting orders so we just started off as we could not wait for a proper ceremony,” said Thabit, of the impromptu, yet successful beginning of the shop. “Now we simply want to inform those interested that we are open.”  The Tailor Shop is located at No. 10B, Duplication Road, Colombo 4 and is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
