Taj Hotels, Sri Lanka shine bright at Culinary Art 2013

Taj Samudra, Colombo, Vivanta by Taj, Bentota and the Gateway Hotel Airport Garden, Colombo together achieved a milestone at the recently held 15th Culinary Art Competition 2013, organised by the Chefs’ Guild of Sri Lanka.
Their combined achievement was a total of 65 medals at the competition that consisted of 25 medals for Taj Samudra, Colombo, 16 medals for Vivanta by Taj, Bentota and 24 medals for the Gateway Hotel Airport Garden, Colombo.
The distinguished panel of judges included top chefs from across the globe and senior hospitality professionals. Executive Chef Chandana Wijeratne from The Gateway Hotel Airport Garden, Colombo is the President of the Negombo chapter and a member of the Executive Committee, while F&B Manager Rajesh was part of the Chefs’ Guild Lanka organising committee.
Bringing pride to Taj Hotels in Sri Lanka, the Taj Samudra Colombo’s food production team walked away with 14 medals consisting of a gold medal, three silvers and 10 bronze medals. The gold medal was won by kitchen artist C.P.E.P. Chamudika in the ‘Butter Carving’ category, while the F&B department achieved 11 medals that consisted of three golds, three silvers and five bronze medals. The gold medal winners were Menaka Dilrukshi, M.S. Freeluck Fernando and Dhanushi Wijethunge. A special celebration was also held for all achievers from the Taj Samudra, Colombo by Area Director and General Manager Rohit Khosla.
The new Vivanta by Taj, Bentota also won a gold medal by R.A.S. Kumara for the ‘Butter Sculpture’ single category while nine silver and six bronze medals were achieved by the rest of the team for a total of 16 medals respectively for the hotel. Amongst the 20 categories, 16 chefs and one F&B associate brought honour and pride to the Gateway Hotel Airport Garden, Colombo by winning five gold, five silver and 14 bronze medals, a total of 24 medals in various categories, achieving highest in the region.
The Executive Sous Chef has been shortlisted to represent the country at the World Culinary Olympics to be held in 2016 in Germany and also won a gold medal for his chocolate carving. All three Taj hotels in Sri Lanka are delighted about such achievements and the hotels are looking forward to a bright future.
