An eclectic selection of music will be presented by the Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC), on Thursday 27 March at 7:30 p.m. at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
The concert will be entitled ‘From Venice to Vienna’ and is a rewarding musical journey in one memorable evening. The box plan is now open at the venue. The premier sponsor of the CMSC is Fairway Holdings.
Venice is in reference to the place of composition of Il Signor Bruschino, Rossini’s first major success in opera. The overture is well known for its instruction for the second violins to tap their bows on the music stands.
Bach’s Third Bran-denburg Concerto in G, BWV 1048 is one of the most frequently performed of the six, and is a concerto grosso in the true sense, with no discernible soloists.
This year is the tercentenary of the birth of Carl Phillipp Emmanuel Bach, the fifth child and most successful of the offspring of Johann Sebastian. He is represented by his third Sinfonia in F major, H.665, a vibrant and interesting piece which will put the orchestra through its paces.
South Africa-based Ashan Peiris, who last performed in public in Colombo at the same venue in 2003, will be the featured soloist in one of Mozart’s most sublime piano concerti, No. 23 in A major, K. 488. It is the epitome of the classicism of Vienna at the time, and goes from the openness of the first movement, through the loneliness and pain of the Siciliano slow movement, to the joyous spirit of the finale.
