The largest-ever group of international musicians will be arriving at Sri Lanka as part of The Commonwealth Resounds!, an event that has been connecting musical cultures, and running cross-cultural projects, partnerships and performances since 2005.   As part of the festivities and events held in conjunction with CHOGM 2013, the commonwealth musicians arriving in the island will share their skills with the community, work in schools, universities and orphanages, perform and coach young musicians while presenting dazzling gala concerts for their sponsors and supporters in Galle, Colombo and Mount Lavinia. During the first two days of their tour, many of the musicians will be staying at the Lighthouse Hotel in Galle, sponsored by Jetwing. They will present a special gala concert at the Lighthouse Hotel on Saturday, 9November. All visiting Commonwealth musicians will be staying at Mount Lavinia Hotel between 10-18 November branding it ‘The Commonwealth Musicians Hotel’ throughout CHOGM. The visiting Commonwealth musicians include distinguished delegates from the International Federation of Musicians and the Musicians’ Union, who will run their Music Business Seminars at Mount Lavinia Hotel. Prizewinning solo musicians from the Royal Over-Seas League will also be in the country accompanied by Director of Arts Roderick Lakin. The Commonwealth Resound! Co-Director Founder Alison Cox will be present alongside other Co-Directors, Managers and members of the organisation. Orchestral musicians from the Commonwealth Festival Orchestra are also part of the group. These musicians are said to have formed a unique partnership with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka for CHOGM 2013. Talented young musicians and composers from the UK’s oldest specialist music school, The Purcell School will be in Sri Lanka with a team of professional musicians who are staff members, along with young musicians and staff members from Chetham’s School of Music, UK’s largest specialist music school. With professional musician and the inspirational founder of Songbound Joe Walters also coming down for the events lined up, many opportunities are expected to be created to establish new choirs within the country. Commonwealth musicians from the Purcell School have been successful in raising funds for Songbound to set up three new choirs for Sri Lankan students – two of which will be in Colombo and one in Kilinochchi. The choirs will be established during CHOGM 2013. The talented musicians coming to Sri Lanka will share their skills with Sri Lankan partners, support and encourage less experienced musicians wherever possible and help create exciting musical events for CHOGM 2013. All musicians from The Commonwealth Resounds! – whether they be young, old, professional, students or amateurs are part of a network of hardworking volunteers. Unlike many other more privileged Commonwealth delegates, they have been expected to raise their own funds to come to Sri Lanka. The musicians have expressed delight in offering their skills and musicianship to Sri Lanka in any way that is needed, with hopes to learn a great deal from the rich culture of Sri Lanka.
