The Galle Ramparts: A black and white photography exhibition by Seneka Abeyratne

At Casa Serena, from 18 to 20 November, Seneka Abeyratne will present 20 black and white photographs of the Galle Ramparts.

Far beyond an architectural survey of the place, way behind the historical approach, these evocative photographs take us into the land of oblivion; another space opens up in front of our eyes, between ruins and tracks of proud fortifications, enhanced by the sight of people – young and old – strolling along the ramparts, suddenly illuminated by white-washed colonial buildings or the horizon of the Indian Ocean.

In the eyes of Seneka Abeyratne, the ramparts enclose the memory of an ancient city and the openness of an undefined future. This three-day exhibition is presented by the Casa Serena Art Gallery with the collaboration and support of Alliance Française de Kotte.

Seneka Abeyratne is a freelance economist, playwright, literary/fine arts critic, photographer, digital artist and contemporary dance choreographer. He is the winner of the Gratiaen Prize (2006) and State Literary Award for Drama (2008). He has published four books to date, including a black and white village photography book, Facets of Wewala (2007). His most recent publication, Temptation (2011), is a screenplay set in Scandinavia. He has held three solo photo/digital art exhibitions to date: two in Sri Lanka and one in the South of France.
