The Workshop Players invite you to ‘dance all night’

In celebration of their 25th anniversary in Sri Lankan theatre, The Workshop Players of Sri Lanka will be holding auditions for Lerner and Loewe’s Broadway classic, ‘My Fair Lady,’ which will be staged in October at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. 

The Workshop Players have enjoyed unprecedented success over the years by bringing some of the best of Broadway musicals and theatre, such as ‘Oliver!’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, ‘Evita’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ’Les Misérables’, and, most recently, Arthur Miller’s ‘A View from the Bridge’, to the local stage. The group kicked off its 25th anniversary year with its second ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ festival, staging ‘Macbeth’ and ‘The Tempest’. 

Based on George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion,’ ‘My Fair Lady’ is a timeless classic, made famous by its film adaptation in 1964 starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, and is considered one of the finest musicals ever created. 

Auditions are for those between 16 and 70 years of age and will be held on Sunday 21 May at the Lionel Wendt rehearsal room at 9 a.m. Registrations begin at 8:30 a.m. 

All roles for the musical are open, and it will be necessary to prepare a song from the musical for the audition. Given how important various accents are to the plot and the nature of the characters in this musical (for example, Eliza’s heavy Cockney accent), demonstrating the ability to adopt the accents required by the chosen role at the audition will be essential.
