Theatre Fest 2012 is an inter-school drama competition themed ‘aspire to excel’ organised by Edexcel – the UK’s largest awarding board – Alethea International School, Aspirations Education and the University of Canberra in association with Trinity Guildhall London and will be held from 25 to 27 October at the Bishop’s College Auditorium.
The competition has been organised by Alethea International School for the third consecutive year and is open to all schools in Sri Lanka. Theatre Fest 2012 is not merely an inter-school drama competition, but also an examination which is connected to the Grade B drama syllabus of the Trinity School of Drama and Speech. In order to ensure transparency and fair assessments, neutral judges/examiners from the Trinity Guildhall London will be judging the best interpretations made by each school on the greatest plays written by William Shakespeare.
Alethea International School Chairman Kumari Hapugalle Perera said, “We are honoured to be the organisers of this competition with two leading education institutes, Aspirations Education and Edexcel. The drama competition comes across as one of the most looked forward theatre festivals, which is directly connected with the Grade B speech and drama syllabus in the Trinity Guildhall.
“Not only are the winners of Theatre Fest 2012 eligible but all the schools that participate and pass the examination will receive two valuable UCAS points to further their studies internationally.”
Edexcel International, Assistant Vice President – India Subcontinent Premila Paulraj said, “As the largest awarding body in the UK we are privileged to support an event of this calibre, which not only nurtures friendly competition through displaying talent but also adds value to students academic experience.
“We believe in providing a well rounded education to students and supporting activities that ensure students’ artistic skills are enhanced. Performing arts is also a part of Edexcel’s suite of BTEC vocational qualifications. Students’ talents and skills in performing arts can be moulded into a world recognised qualification with opportunity to enhance their skills as well as to further their education.”
The drama competition is open to all local and international schools on the island making it a platform for students to learn from each other and broaden their outlook, giving them a chance to showcase their creative talents and compete with peers.
Aspirations Educations Chairman Ajith Abeysekera said, “True to our vision, we have always been a fountain of inspiration which helps one realise his true aspirations. We are truly happy to be associated with an event which produces path breakers in drama and we will continue to support events of this nature in future.”
The three day event will host the top four schools at the grand finale on 27 October, with awards and prizes for the best director, best comedy, best tragedy, supporting crew and cast. Best actor and actress will be offered a trip to Canberra, Australia sponsored by the University of Canberra and Aspirations Education.
