Trees With Three Lines – An exhibition of nature drawings in lines

Wandering through deep dense forests, and following butterflies along crystal lakes, students Vajira Perera, Dulari De Fonseka and Ruvi Rodrigo of the Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts (VAFA), looked deep into nature, while pursuing their passion for nature illustrations. Their zeal for studying the natural environment and translating it on to canvas under the guidance of their teacher, artist Karunasiri Wijesinghe has culminated in an exhibition depicting nature through a different perspective.

Karunasiri Wijesinghe is a professional artist in nature drawing in Sri Lanka. Apart from his professional artistic endeavours, Karunasiri is a lecturer at Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts (VAFA) and a course director at Nature Studio on the subject of Nature Studies. He is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Visual & Performing Arts. His inspiration and influence as a teacher of the arts has led to this exhibition which is titled “Trees with Three Lines”. This exhibition will depict the wonders of nature through discoveries that were made from a number of explorations conducted in the jungles of Sri Lanka. Having joined Vibhavi in the year 2012, Vajira Perera, always loved art and had a desire to study art. It has been a year since she joined the academy. Vajira says “as a person who loves nature, these trips were of special significance as we were able to study and appreciate the lines, shades, texture, colour, composition and many other areas that encompasses the wonders of mother nature.” Dulari De Fonseka, another artist displaying her work, entered the Vibhavi Academy in 2010. She joined the academy with the desire to learn art in a theoretical manner She says “the instantaneous change that takes place in the landscape and the ability to understand and depict these changes became stronger through every class that we attended and importantly gave me tremendous pleasure.” Even though she has been pursuing art as a hobby from a young age Dulari’s desire to learn new forms of art led her to Chandraguptha Thenuwara, Founder & Chairperson of Vibhavi, who also functions as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Visual & Performing Arts. Participating in a workshop at Vibhavi and after completing her undergraduate studies in Business Administration, Ruvi Rodrigo enrolled herself at Vibhavi in 2012. Ruvi said this workshop caused a “curiosity in me and thereafter a desire for some serious study.” “Trees with Three Lines” will be on for preview on the 4th from 5.00PM to 7.00PM and on display from November 4th – 6th at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from 10.00am – 7.00PM.
