Two other properties - Jungle Beach Resort, Trincomalee and UGA Bay, Passekuda – both offering a unique eco-beach concept,  are due to commence operations in 2012.

UGA Resorts is a fully owned subsidiary of the Finco Holdings – a leading private sector organisation in Sri Lanka with a sound financial standing and a solid reputation for excellence. Incorporated in 1963, the group comprises several companies recording success in diverse fields.

A rustic retreat in the heart of the cultural triangle, Ullagalla Resort is the maiden offering from UGA Resorts.  Hidden away in the quiet village of Tirappane in the Anuradhapura district, this unmistakable haven is just 20km from the historic city and holds the distinction of being the only luxury boutique property that offers such close proximity to the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka – a solitary beacon that stands out as a pristine green paradise for those who seek to truly get away from it all.

Whether you are on a cultural quest, an idyllic honeymoon, a rejuvenating wellness programme, a rural adventure or a peaceful pilgrimage to the olden shrines; at Ullagalla Resorts you can expect experiences like no other before.

Once a traditional ‘walawwa’ or grand ancestral home of local chieftains whose rule extended across the Northern Province itself, Ullgalla has a noble past. Its glories have been lovingly restored to former splendour and now offer a glimpse to the traditions of a bygone era. The concept of preservation was also extended to the development of the entire property and protecting the surrounding environment took precedence. Not a single tree was cut down, and all construction – in strict accordance with Green policies, took place on already utilised land.

In fact, nearly a 1000 (root balled) trees were planted in the property.  58 lush acres bordering two ancient reservoirs – Ullagalla and Wannamaduwa, complete with cultivated paddy fields form the heartland of this breathtakingly beautiful resort. And secluded amidst this wilderness, blending perfectly with the surrounds, every comfort and facility awaits you.  20 luxurious chalets – each with its own private plunge pool; offer spacious comforts with all the modern amenities of 21st century living.

Their deep commitment to preserving the environment has earned Gold for Ulagalla Resorts at the prestigious National Green Awards 2011, honouring them as the most eco-friendly boutique resort in the hospitality sector in Sri Lanka.

Ulagalla is also a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified resort with a Silver rating from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).  Green materials were used mainly for construction from the very outset with the walls, floors and ceilings of each chalet being built with ‘Durra’ panels. Made from high density compressed paddy straw fibre Durra is fire and thermal resistant and 100% recyclable.  Several environmental practices are keenly adhered to such as rainwater harvesting, bio-gas powered lighting, non-motorised activities, farming organic produce and more. Ulagalla Resort is the only resort in Sri Lanka to generate 50% of its energy requirement through solar power; contributing excess energy to the National Grid.

At Ullgalla Resort the experiences and activities on offer are certainly varied. The range is vast: from quiet relaxation to exciting action, you have much to choose from. At the luxury of the Spa, wellness programmes will rejuvenate even the most stressed of souls. For those who prefer less leisure, there is everything from horse riding, archery to kayaking. You can also visit all the surrounding historical sites on an exciting bicycle tour.

For the devoted nature lover there are plenty of trails to trek, and bird watching and nature tours to go on too.  And for those who are simply too fond of a certain kind of green, there is a Golf driving range. The newest addition to the list of facilities at Ullagalla Resort, this is the first and the only one in the area.  This unique driving range is built to merge unobtrusively with the natural surroundings – so when you take a break from practising for that perfect Birdie, you can admire a few of the feathered kind up in the trees too.

Being in such close vicinity to the all the attractions of the cultural triangle, Ullagalla Resort is also the perfect base for excursions to the heritage sites.  The ancient capital of Anuradhapura boasted many architectural wonders of opulence, but today offers limited luxury to the travellers who seek its past wonders and visit its holy shrines and temples.  Ullagalla Resorts has stepped into this niche to take back that tradition of lavishness – in more ways than one; to offer 21th century visitors -pleasure seekers and pilgrims alike, the opportunity to rest in ultimate luxury amidst pristine wonders of natural beauty.
