‘The Studio’ is the only school in Sri Lanka which caters to the performing arts and fine arts under one roof. The ‘Academy of Organ Music’ which was established by Shyama Perera in the year 1990 was developed into ‘The Studio’ by her daughter Swasha Malalasekara, in the year 2007.

The objective of Swasha was to develop the school to be the largest performing arts academy which caters to all needs in the field of arts. “Parents find it easier to send their children for 2-3 subjects to the same place on the same day instead of making them travel to several places”, stressed Malalasekara. “The studio is designed for students who wish to pursue speech, drama, music and fine arts”.

The Studio offers courses in speech and drama, acting, spoken English, presentation skills and public speaking. The student is given the option of selecting either one or more of these courses.

The drama program offers examination levels for students who wish to follow the structured curriculum and gain technical education in the field of speech and drama. With regard to music, the studio offers a wide array of mediums.

Here the students receive a foundation of learning basics in order to explore the advanced levels.

The studio also focuses on fine arts. These classes explore the elements and principals of design, and grounding students in basic drawing skills. They are also taught to paint, sculpt, and create in a variety of different mediums that explore their individual talents and hone their appreciation of arts.

“The Studio is the only academy in Sri Lanka which caters Performing Arts and Fine Arts under one roof,” she reiterated.

‘Night at the West End’, which was held recently show-cased the brilliant performances of the current students of ‘The Studio’.

The event was indeed an eye opener to many as it boasted a variety of talent ranging from music and dance to theatre.

There was a large enthusiastic audience who were present at the concert to watch these students who merrily displayed their talents to the public. The Merry Anne Singers too participated for vocals. Dance works center did two dance items.  This celebration of talent has indeed grabbed the awareness of those who appreciate quality entertainment.
