Pushpa Rajapaksa, Attorney-at-Law and Chairperson of the Liya Abhiman Organisation, donated a portable ventilator for the ICU and Special Baby Care Unit at the Castle Street Maternity Hospital on 28 May.

Ventilators are machines that provide breathing support for ill or premature babies who are often too weak to breathe properly on their own.

Dr. W.K. Wickramasinghe, Director of the Hospital said: “We gratefully accept this generous donation and this is considered as significant upgrade of hospital facilities. This is the first portable ventilator machine a Government hospital has. With this help we don’t need to transfer our patients to other hospitals. Now we are able to treat them in our emergency care unit. This donation will contribute to improve and strengthen health care services for babies and women. This is a great achievement for our hospital.” The machine was donated on a request made by Dr. W.K. Wickramasinghe, Director Castle Street Maternity Hospital.
