The Wildlife & Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka’s monthly lecture for December will be delivered by Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne and is titled ‘Why Sri Lanka is super-rich for Wildlife’.
Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne has published several books on Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity and wildlife. He has aligned an economic agenda for wildlife conservation and was the first to brand the ‘Elephant Gathering,’ introduce the concept of leopard safaris, publicise Sri Lanka as best for blue whale and the best chance for sperm whale super-pods and publicise Kalpitiya as a third whale watching hot spot and one of the best in Asia for pelagic seabirds.
More recently he has drawn attention to physical, evolutionary and cultural factors that have made the country super-rich for wildlife. In this talk he will show how this moderately-sized island has a relatively higher number of species per unit area than large tropical islands such as Madagascar, Borneo and New Guinea.
The lecture will be delivered on Thursday 18 December at 6:15 p.m. at the Department of Meteorology Auditorium, 383, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 (opposite BMICH). All are welcome and entrance is free.
