WNPS monthly lecture to showcase ‘Majesty of the Sri Lankan Elephant’

The Wildlife & Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka monthly lecture for March 2015 is titled ‘A slideshow and talk – Majesty of the Sri Lankan Elephant’ and will be delivered by Vajira Wijegunawardane on Thursday 19 March at 6:15 p.m. An intimate visual journey into the elephants’ world, the result of an over 18-year-long personal odyssey photographing elephants in the wild, the slideshow will showcase elephants as never seen before in interesting and spectacular lighting conditions, such as elephants sparring and fighting for supremacy, calves just being calves, rare tuskers in all their grandeur, moments depicting the uniqueness and beauty of elephants in the wild and the many stunning locations the elephant is found in Sri Lanka. Wijegunawardane is a past Head Prefect of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia and a Graduate in Business Studies from the University of Reading, UK. He holds a Masters Degree in Financial Economics from the University of Colombo. He is a fund manager by training and is currently serving the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka as the Director – Capital Market Development. Wijegunawardane is a keen cricketer, an avid photographer and a dedicated nature enthusiast. He served in the Presidential Task Force on Wildlife Conservation in 2001 and is currently a Director at Environmental Foundation Ltd. (EFL). Wijegunawardane has been a frequent visitor to national parks from a very young age with his family and pursued wildlife photography with a passion upon his return from the UK after his higher studies in 1997. During this period he has photographed over 80 tuskers in the wild and published a bestselling coffee table book, ‘Sri Lankan Elephant – A Celebration of Majesty’ in 2010, which was reprinted in 2013 by popular demand. The lecture will delivered at the Department of Meteorology Auditorium, 383, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 (opposite BMICH). All are welcome and entrance is free.
