The YMCA will be celebrating the Christmas season with its Annual Carol Service to be held for the second consecutive year at the Race Course grandstand on 6 December from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Army Band will feature prominently and last year they gave a superlative performance along with the Salvation Army Band who entertained the crowd and enabled them to join in some of the Carols. This year, like last year, will feature the Visually Handicapped Choir, school choirs from De Mazenod College Kandana, Ladies College Choir (Sinhala), St. Benedict’s College, and some Church choirs like the one from St. Thomas’ Kotte and many more. In addition attempts are being made to get some renowned singers or groups to perform as well. The atmosphere at the Race Course is indeed electrifying and those who attended last year went away with a sense of satisfaction. It has been the tradition for the past 90 years to have the Carol Service in the Colombo YMCA Gymnasium, but there have been occasions when it has been held outside, as in 1958 when it was held at the Ragama Chest Hospital on 13 December. This year YMCA has gone back to the old tradition of having the Carol Service on the first Saturday in December, which is 6 December, and it happens to be a Poya day as well. It has been the vision of the President of the Colombo YMCA Lal Vithanage to venture out of the YMCA and take the Carol Service out to the people, hence his effort to get the Race Course grandstand. So come 6 December, please keep the date free.
