This below poem forms part of a
manuscript of poetry being compiled for publication by a group of followers of the Naqshqbqndi Sufi Order, from Sri Lanka and abroad. Note: In the Sufi Islamic tradition promoting love and peace as preached
by Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), the Sufi mystics often refer to the ‘Beloved’ as the Universal Reality or God (Allah). The Sufi is someone who is the lover of the Beloved and living a life of love according to the spiritual path of Islam preached by Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) and sees every human being and living thing as a manifestation of God’s benevolence.
Bestowing love to all humankind and seeing the oneness in
all things are the basic
principles of Sufism.
By Rasheda Thaha
If love happens to lurk in your heart
Let it bloom the awaiting buds,
Till spirit reach glistening height
And elevate in jubilant delight.
Live, let love grace your soul
Embrace all, embrace the whole,
Be it the padre citing sermon in a holy chapel
Or the calm yogi in a serene temple
Or the Lover in rapt by the Saint’s Shrine
Inside a Mosque, the worshipper benign.
Humans, the Universal souls the Lord adore
In absence of light, darkness obscure
In every being the harmony of peace,
In absence of love, goodness cease
Let not the candle diminish its ray
Let not the lovers in exile stray
Make effort for your deeds refine,
From darkness alter into light Divine
Seek beauty of the Lord Almighty,
Then expect to be confounded in avidity.
Let the heart from the slumber awaken
Let the lifespan not vainly drain and forsaken
Learn, from the wisdom of the enlightened,
From tales of love, and taste of pleasure heightened,
Stretch the arms wide, and mind broaden to fathom
Rise with every deed, rise above and fill the gaps of chasm.
The Lord of every being, fashioned Universe for humanity,
To not loathe or destroy, but live side by side in unity.
