A donation of a Dialysis CRRT machine to Batticaloa Teaching Hospital was made under the Singer ‘Thirst for Life’ program recently.

Batticaloa region is greatly affected by kidney disease and patients transferred from the nearby regions too are treated at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital. As the hospital’s Dialysis CRRT machine alone does not sufficient to meet the demand, a need of another machine has been a long felt necessity.

Among the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects carry out by Singer Sri Lanka, Thirst for Life is a prominent program. The project aims to provide Dialysis CRRT machines to identified needy hospitals in the country.

Thirst for Life project was started in 2013 donating the first two Dialysis CRRT machines to the Polonnaruwa Hospital five years ago. One Dialysis CRRT machine costs about Rs. 3 million and apart from the Polonnaruwa Hospital, Batticaloa Teaching Hospital, Colombo National Hospital, Jaffna Hospital, Wathupitiwala Hospital and Medawachchiya Hospital are the other hospitals where Dialysis CRRT machines were set up under the Thirst for Life project.

Customers who purchase water filters from the islandwide Singer showrooms contribute to the project as Rs. 100 from each water filter is donated to the Thirst for Life project. There are seven such machines so far set up by the project.

Singer Group Chief Executive Officer and Head of CSR Committee Mahesh Wijewardena said that they were very happy to include this worthy project among Singer Sri Lanka’s CSR projects. He also mentioned that Singer customers too were involved in such a noble project where many Sri Lankans with kidney disease were benefited.

“Thirst for Life has set a good example for our business community becoming an encouragement to involve in such noble projects. I hope our fellow corporate sector institutions will follow our footsteps to serve the society,” he concluded.

Singer Marketing Director Kumar Samarasinghe pointed out that most of the victims of kidney ailments are from North Central region where farmers who feed the country are fall prey to this disease. “It is a great thing and we consider it as our duty to support these farmers through this project,” he emphasised.

Thirst for Life project also conducts awareness and irradiation programs for water related infections in rural areas with the aim to uplift the health standards of community.

Thirst for Life Project Head and Singer Senior Brand Manager Darshana Appuhami assured the continuity of the program and said they hoped to widen their scope and help other affected regions too by providing Dialysis CRRT machines.

He also mentioned that facilities in rural hospitals were not sufficient to treat the growing number of kidney patients and Singer was proud to shoulder this national requirement through this project while setting an example. Darshana has also revealed that they hoped to start a special awareness program aiming the most affected areas to educate masses on how to prevent kidney diseases.
