Batticaloa Teaching Hospital Emergency and Accident Project (BEAP), the exemplary humanitarian project by the Government of Sri Lanka, together with The Foundation Supporting a National Trauma Center in Sri Lanka, handed over a brand new, fully-equipped accident and trauma unit to the people of Batticaloa District.

Chief Guest Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne along with several dignitaries declared open the unit at the premises of the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.

Recognising the fact that emergency health-care facilities were grossly inadequate for the needs of approximately two million people in the region, BEAP, which is registered as an approved charity with the Government of Australia, helped build the facility at a total cost of Rs. 780 million. The trauma centre comes equipped with a modern emergency reception area, accident evaluation facility, four well-equipped operating theatres, and recovery rooms, two wards comprising 86 beds (male/female) and staff and storage facilities.

HNB’s Chief Human Resource Officer/Trustee HNB Sustainability foundation said the contribution was a small token of the bank’s commitment to improving and creating accessibility to proper healthcare in the country. “We are privileged to have played a role in such a visionary and noble project, one that will leave a lasting legacy not only to the citizens of Batticaloa but to the healthcare and medical development of our country,” said HNB’s Chief Human Resource Officer/Trustee HNB Sustainability Foundation Chiranthi Cooray.

“We congratulate Dr. David Young and the Board of Trustees of the fund for their untiring efforts to ensuring the completion of this project,” she added.

“There is a great need for such a facility in the Eastern province which will provide a service that can help save lives and decrease the time taken for recovery,” explained Cooray, who went on to note that the Unit will also provide a wonderful training facility for future generations of doctors.

“HNB is pleased to be associated with positive initiatives which serve to enhance a legacy for future generations,” summed up Cooray.
