Lanka Hospitals delivers 1,400th IVF baby

Lanka Hospitals, the internationally-accredited multiple award-winning healthcare provider, has successfully delivered over 1,400 IVF babies since the inception of its Fertility Centre in 2007. Lanka Hospitals’ Fertility Centre announced that it had reached a new milestone with the completion of the delivery of the 1,400th IVF baby.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a treatment method available to assist couples who experience fertility problems to conceive a baby. During IVF an egg is harvested from the woman’s ovaries and fertilised with a sperm of the partner in the IVF laboratory. In addition, Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a process carried out by injecting the sperm into the egg via a micromanipulator.

Furthermore, Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI) is yet another procedure that improves fertilisation. Following these processes, a fertilised egg is thereafter cultured in an incubator to become an embryo and then transferred to the woman’s womb to implant and develop further. The remaining embryos are frozen and banked for further pregnancies if required for a duration of five years.

Another advanced procedure that improves the chances of conceiving a healthy baby through IVF is Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT), a cutting-edge procedure available to identify genetic abnormalities in embryos. Lanka Hospitals’ Fertility Centre offers two types of genetic tests during IVF treatment.

They are referred to as pre-implantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A) and pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M). PGT-A assists in identifying genetic disorders such as Downs syndrome and Turner syndrome, while PGT-M helps to identify inherited genetic conditions such as Thalassemia and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

“Our success rates have shown that the chances of conceiving a child through IVF and ICSI treatment are very high. It is one of the most advanced ways to address problems of infertility and it can increase the chances of having a healthy baby,” Lanka Hospitals Fertility Centre Clinical Embryologist Dr. Madara Ralapanawe stated.

“A couple who could not conceive through other fertility procedures can choose IVF or ICSI for conception. IVF and ICSI treatment offer a host of benefits that many other alternative treatment methods would not provide when trying to conceive a baby,” Lanka Hospitals Resident Fertility Centre Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Dr. Nishendra Karunaratne stated.
