Long awaited PET scanner handed over to Maharagama Apeksha Hospital

The long awaited Positron Emission Tomography (PET) CT scanner which was purchased by public contribution was ceremonially handed over to Maharagama Apeksha Hospital by Kadijah Foundation President and the Fight Cancer Team (FCT) Founder Dr. M.S.H. Mohamed on Sunday.

“Having lived my life for 48 years, I had to come to the cancer hospital with my son when he was just 15. Two years prior to that, I spent millions in other countries as we tried our best to fight the deadly disease. Having realised how hard it was to do so, we came to Maharagama. This hospital was truly not as bad as what people assume as they not only helped my son but helped our family stay strong during the process. I have such dear feelings with regards to this hospital,” said Mohamed.“The whole reason behind this initiation is my son. He told me one day that we should buy the hospital a PET scanner after researching on it. There are so many cancer patients that come to the hospital on a daily basis. The only thing he had ever asked me for during his 18 years was that I purchase this machine that will help save so many lives. It was possible because of the golden hearted Sri Lankans,” he added.

The high-tech state of the art machine which costs around Rs. 202 million became a reality due to the contribution of 20 million people and the commitment of some 150 dedicated members of the Kadijah Foundation and the FCT.

Hundreds of people including the donors who supported were present at the Apeksha Hospital on foot in front of the Wellawatte Roxy Cinema via Nugegoda in a majestic parade showing the strength of the nation.

It was declared open by the hand of a small kid suffering due to severe cancer. Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne and Apeksha Hospital staff also participated in the event.
