World Diabetes Day 2017 which was commemorated on 14 November enhanced the continuing dialogue about the disease globally. Diabetes is a growing concern as a major non communicable disease. In fact it is considered to be reaching epidemic proportions globally. As Asians, Sri Lankans are at higher risk to develop Type 2 Diabetes. Problem with diabetes is that it is not just elevated blood sugar, it brings about so many complications like permanent blindness, kidney failure, foot amputation and also increases ones risk for heart attacks and strokes. The alarming statistic is 30-40% of people with diabetes don’t know that they have the disease, since they haven’t got themselves checked.

Addressing the critical need to screen for diabetes and its complications, the pioneer in the field of Digital Health Services in Sri Lanka, MyDoctor.lk organised an event in partnership with Diabetasol parallel to the ‘World Diabetes Day’ which was held on 25 November, at the Bambalapitiya flats – Community Center, to screen, educate the participants and to address the common problems related to diabetes for free.

The purpose of screening is to identify asymptomatic individuals who are likely to have diabetes. MyDoctor conducted blood sugar test, BMI assessment, blood pressure assessment and arranged consultation with a doctor to review the results and advice the patients. Moreover physiotherapists and nutritionists were invited to give specific counselling for patients with problems. Assessment for Diabetes Neuropathy (nerve damage), Diabetes Retinopathy (Damages in eyes due to diabetes) and assessment for spectacles were also comprehensively arranged.

Going a step beyond, excelling in their more-familiar field of Digital health, MyDoctor facilitated ‘On site video conferencing’ for individuals who were detected to have serious issues, enabling them to speak to a diabetes specialist, who was remotely located. Healthy foods were introduced as exhibits and ways to prepare them in a hygienic manner was demonstrated by dieticians.

The highly successful event was mainly partnered by Diabetasol which provides complementary nutrients for individuals with Diabetes. Other partners who contributed were Doc 990, ‘Healthy Life Clinic’ and Vision Care.

The day’s proceedings concluded by rewarding competition winners from the ‘MyDoctor Diabetes day Facebook competition’ with healthy gift packs in association with Diabetasol. Members of MyDoctor were rewarded with healthy giveaways as well. MyDoctor.lk, which is now using the latest digital technology to cater to all medical needs, is in the process of marking their presence in the healthcare industry. The participants were assured that MyDoctor.lk is available to assist their medical needs, 24x7.
