The SAARC Women’s Association (SWA), an organisation which fosters harmony and connectivity among women in the South Asian countries, has extended their support to the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians (SLCP) which is facing the challenges of ensuring critical medicine availability to paediatric units across the country hampered by the current shortages.
SWA President Nimmi Thambiayah and members Prabha Nair Nagalingam, Natalie De Silva, Tusitha Kumarakulasingam met SLCP President Prof. Shaman Rajendrajith, Prof. Asvini Fernando, Prof. Kalyani Guruge and a team of representatives to hand over the donation collected.
Both organisations strongly believe that such shortages should be minimised and eradicated as being able to obtain required medicines is a fundamental right of a child given that SL offers free health care to all citizens.
Given the current economic crisis we are facing, shortages of medicines are a widespread reality. The SLCP has set up a proactive procedure to ensure limitations are minimised.
When the SWA was made aware of the need, the team unanimously decided to connect with the project under its “Reach Out Program.” The funds were raised among the members and their families. No other organisations were involved in this project.
Within a short span of 10 days everyone rallied and made sure that a substantial donation was made possible. The two organisations also discussed opportunities for collaboration using the extensive network the SWA possesses.
