Sri Lanka Insurance entered in to a strategic partnership with Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) with the objective of prompting road safety to minimise road accidents.

This special program will be channelled through the Prevention of Road Traffic Crashes (PRTC) committee led by the leadership of SLMA.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange took place on the 18 July at Sri Lanka Medical Association Head Office, Colombo in the presence of General Insurance of Sri Lanka Insurance Group Chief Executive Officer Chandana L. Aluthgama, Chief Operating Officer Priyantha Perera and SLMA President Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, Expert Committee Convener Dr. Thushara Matiwalage, SLMA Members Dr. Sanjay Perera, and Dr. Surantha Perera.

The strategic tie-up between the two organisations will be facilitating programs on educating the general public on road etiquette and to encourage motorists to be more courteous and self-disciplined while they are on the road. A series of programs have been designed focusing on drivers of passenger vehicles and school children. Furthermore, a media campaign to create awareness on road safety will be executed to educate the general public.

As the number one motor insurance brand in Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Insurance Motor Plus goes beyond its call of duty to add value to its customers and the citizens of the country. Whilst providing an array of products to cater different affinity groups in the market such as female driver, motor cyclists, senior citizens, commercial vehicle drivers, three-wheeler segment, and premier life-style segments etc. the brand understands its responsibility in adding value towards its customers and the community.

Also it is reported that the annual average of road accidents counts up to 40,000 per year and the fatality rate is 3000 per year in average. Furthermore, 8000 to 9000 persons seek medical facilities for serious injuries. As a result, the country has to bear an expense of Rs. 200 billion to Rs. 300 billion annually which amounts to 2% to 3% of the GDP (Source: Health Bulletin – Ministry of Health 2022). This is a clear indication that the country needs a structured program to create awareness among the motorists and the general public. Understanding the importance of this SLIC joined hands with SLMA for this worthy cause of creating awareness among motorists and the public.

Sri Lanka Medical Association is heading the expert committee on Prevention of Road Traffic Crashes (PRTC) which was instilled under the President Task Force. The expert committee consists of number stakeholders that includes Doctor and health personnel, Engineers, Police, Policy makers, Registration of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Department, Road Development Authority and Urban Development Authority representatives, Vehicle Fleet Owners etc. This committee will spearhead the awareness programs together with SLIC to minimise the number of road accidents that takes place.
