Diabetes, once considered a disease of the developed world, has become a worldwide pandemic.
There is an alarming increase of prevalence in diabetes in Sri Lanka, where a Colombo urban study shows that 27.1% of the Colombo urban population suffers from diabetes.
In the Sri Lankan context, according to the statistics released by International Federation of Diabetes in 2017 states that 1.1 million adults (20-79) are suffering from diabetes comparative prevalence of diabetes is 10.7%.
Adults with undiagnosed diabetes (20-79) are 428,000 and mean diabetes-related expenditure per person (20-79) with diabetes is $ 184.8 (approximately Rs. 34,000). Diabetes related deaths (20-79 years) of Sri Lanka is 15,534.
In the global scale by 2017, there are approximately 425 million adults (20-79 years) were living with diabetes and by 2045 the figure will be expected to rise to 629 million.
Diabetes caused four million deaths and more than 21 million live births (one in seven births) were affected by diabetes during pregnancy.
Most common causes for the diabetes are unhealthy dietary patterns, unhealthy lifestyle and generic factors of Sri Lankans.
People tend to consume high energy dense food instead of low energy dense food and people are reluctant to do physical exercises.
While the statistics reflect the severity of the status of the most common non-communicable disease, insurers are reluctant to provide insurance cover for people with diabetes.
As a result diabetes patients does not have an alternative to cover their medical expenses instead of bear them by themselves.
