Making a new beginning in diagnosis of breast cancer, Sri Lanka’s first of its kind Digital Mammography with Tomosynthesis technology was commenced recently at Asiri Surgical Hospital, Colombo making them the first private healthcare provider to offer the advanced three-dimensional breast imaging for the earliest detection in breast cancer. Tomosynthesis is the gold standard in breast cancer screening and detection and builds upon the success of digital mammography. This new, advanced type of mammography produces 3D image of breast, providing doctors with a clearer view through overlapping breast tissue. The result is a more detailed picture making breast abnormalities easier to see, even in dense tissue. “As part of our commitment to bring world class medical technology at affordable costs to Sri Lanka, we are proud to be the first to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Asiri Group of Hospitals Deputy CEO and Director Dr. Manjula Karunaratne. “This technology improves the radiologist’s ability to detect potential breast cancers by helping pin-point the size, shape and abnormalities further enabling the radiologist to distinguish harmless structures from tumours, leading to fewer false alarms and less anxiety for women,” added Dr. Karunaratne on the benefit of the technology. “Breast cancer is one of the commonest malignancies affecting women,” explained Asiri Surgical Hospital Head of Radiology Dr. Shantha Hettiarachchi. “This 3D Tomosynthesis technology will enable faster and accurate biopsies requiring shorter examination time while significantly improving patient comfort and safety,” she noted. The Health Ministry statistics point out that out of 15,000 cancer patients detected each year in Sri Lanka, 25% are women with breast cancer, the prevalence of which is on the rise in Sri Lanka. The National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) under the Ministry of Health urges women who have passed their adolescence to have regular checks, citing that early detection is treatable. Member of Asiri Group of Hospitals, Asiri Surgical offers an array of services and treatments using the latest medical technology. It consists of several Intensive Care Units (ICUs), emergency treatment services and modern operating theatre suites, PET/CT, trauma care, a fully-fledged Urology service and a state-of-the-art Health Care Centre.
