Making a new beginning in diagnosis of breast cancer, Sri Lanka’s first of its kind Digital Mammography with Tomosynthesis technology was commenced recently at Asiri Surgical Hospital, Colombo making them the first private healthcare provider to offer the advanced three-dimensional breast imaging for the earliest detection in breast cancer. Tomosynthesis is the gold standard in breast cancer screening and detection and builds upon the success of digital mammography. This new, advanced type of mammography produces 3D image of breast, providing doctors with a clearer view through overlapping breast tissue. The Health Ministry statistics point out that out of 15,000 cancer patients detected each year in Sri Lanka, 25% are women with breast cancer, the prevalence of which is on the rise in Sri Lanka. The National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) under the Ministry of Health urges women who have passed their adolescence to have regular checks, citing that early detection is treatable.
