The Asiri Surgical Hospital (ASH) received the ISO certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management and Total Quality Management Systems. As Sri Lanka’s most technologically advanced private hospital, Asiri Surgical was awarded ISO 9001:2008 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management System by BM Trada Certifications Ltd., United Kingdom.
This certification was awarded for the hospital’s faultless commitment to providing world-class health care solutions including surgical care, critical care, diagnostic and rehabilitation services that conforms to the specific standards by International Standards Organisation (ISO).
“We have always had a strict quality control system,” said Dr. Manjula Karunarathna, Director/Chief Operating Officer of Asiri Hospitals. “Our additional structure of OHSAS 18001:2007 and ISO 9001:2008 underlies our commitment to continuous quality improvement and is added assurance to our customer and employees that we follow international accepted standards.”
BM TRADA Certification is a leading multi-sector certification body accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) with a portfolio of services that includes certification to quality, environmental, energy, information security, health and safety and food safety management systems, as well as chain of custody and product and personnel schemes.
Key gains from ISO 9001:2008 management system implementations are improved consistency of service and performance, higher customer satisfaction levels, improved customer perceptions, and improved productivity and efficiency that the Asiri Hospital applied to scrutinise and re-design based on international standards.
The OHSAS 18001:2007 standards were developed in response to market demand for a health and safety management system against which organisations may be assessed and certified and demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to continual improvement in health and safety performance and compliance with legislation through maintenance of an Occupational Health and Management System (OHSMS).
The food and beverage department of Asiri Surgical Hospital also received the ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management System Certification for ensuring the entire processing cycle including procurement, storage, food preparation, serving and quality assurance whilst keeping the standards and training on par with international safety standards and methods. “This is a proactive way for us to identify and mitigate any risks and threats and manage the whole F&B system in an efficient and effective manner,” said Dr. Karunarathna.
Additionally, the hospital received two gold awards at the National Business Excellence Awards 2012 organised by the National Chamber of Commerce. The awards, namely, the Gold Award for the Best Tech-Savvy Company was awarded for the best state-of-the-art technology contributing to the upliftment of national health and social wellbeing, and the Gold Award for the Healthcare and Related Services Sector which was awarded for the best financial performance, new products and processes introduced, HR policies and procedures and CSR activities conducted during the financial year.
Currently, the hospital is in the process of working towards obtaining Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation which is the gold standard in hospital accreditation.
