Acknowledging that obesity is no longer considered a cosmetic issue that is caused by overeating and a lack of self control but a chronic progressive disease resulting from multiple environmental and genetic factors, Asiri Surgical recently started a weight management clinic within their wellness suite. Clients can now avail themselves of a team of professionals from physicians to dieticians and nutritionists plus exercise instructors, all within the privacy of a consultation to help them attain a new level of health and well-being.

“The disease of obesity is extremely costly not just in terms of finances but its negative impact on individual’s health,” points out Teaching Hospital Karapitiya Consultant Physician and Asiri Surgical visiting consultant Dr. Thushara De Silva, who went on to state that due to its progressive nature, obesity and being overweight requires life-long control and management.

“Healthy eating and maintaining a proper body weight can help individuals be in good shape while improving overall health and greatly reducing the risks of many common conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, osteo-arthritis, ulcerative colitis and even some types of cancers, which are brought upon by unwholesome bingeing and lifestyles.”

Asiri Surgical, being in the forefront of medical and healthcare in its ‘Wellness’ mission will customise weight management programs depending on the individual’s background and lifestyle. Adopting a policy that each schedule has to be tailor-made, they will assist clients through education and monitoring, achieve and maintain a balanced ideal weight. Being in fine fettle will also prevent weight related problems that manifest in the form of non-communicable diseases, which if identified will be treated upon promptly. For this, the multi disciplinary team of physicians, nutritionists, behavioural and exercise trainers, all have been included in the plan of action.

Treatment is individual and led by Consultant Physician Dr. Thushara De Silva and his team who will work together to help the patient succeed on the path to good shape as well as maintain and manage the body weight through education and monitoring.

Asiri Surgical’s obesity and weight management clinic, housed in the Wellness centre detached from the main hospital premises offers a calm, quiet and welcoming ambience. The secluded area ensures that other patients and visitors do not have access to it. Privacy is also assured as there will not be any other consultation taking place at the time the dietician or physician is being consulted.

Confidentiality is maintained right through, with dedicated customer relations officers ensuring efficiency while eliminating delays and inconveniences. A wide choice of health packages are also available, tailored to suit individual needs and lifestyles.

Prevalence of obesity in Sri Lanka is on the rise with approximately 20% of adult men and 36% of women falling within the classification. While reminding people of the morbidities of excess weight, such as diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea and weight related joint issues, the obesity and weight management clinic at Asiri are particularly alarmed of the rising prevalence of obesity in children and teenagers. While the common consequences of obesity have been mentioned, some of the lesser known disorders are women polycystic ovarian syndrome in women and sub-fertility. When women are obese, their fertility levels drop drastically and with weight reduction ability to conceive is higher.
