Community health education kicks off at Hemas Hospital, Thalawathugoda

Reflecting a belief that health education has the potential to make a huge difference in overall healthcare of a community, Hemas Hospital Thalawathugoda has already commenced a series of free health education seminars at their facility. With an opening set for June this year, the new state-of-the-art hospital hosted its first public seminar recently, on common cardiac ailments and its prevention, delivered by National Hospital of Sri Lanka consultant cardiologist Dr. Champike Ponnamperuma.

The well attended seminar, mostly by residents of the area, was followed by a lively interactive discussion as well as a free random blood sugar test for all those present. The seminar covered topics from common coronary syndromes to symptoms, risk factors, immediate treatment, prevention and a host of topics on the prevention, care and cure of common coronary ailments. The hospital plans to have such sessions at least once a month to benefit the community with about 100 to 150 participants.

“It was an informative and knowledgeable lecture on heart diseases and emergency care. We look forward to future events such as this,” a participant, Sri Lanka for American Society for Quality Chief Examiner Prasanna Ranatunge commented. “Every neighbourhood deserves a great hospital and we are confident that Hemas Hospitals will undoubtedly be among the best in the Country,” General Manager Dr. Chamila Ariyananda said. “As such we have planned a series of free education programs which are devoted to helping people lead a healthier lifestyle while understanding the ailment,” she enthused. She went on to note that the hospital will offer a full calendar of such public and community education and seminar events that will focus on many topics of interest including women’s health, diabetes control and management, common orthopedic ailments plus one on ones with the Consultants. “Health education is a very important area of healthcare and we at Hemas Hospitals would like to change the way people approach health and healing by broadening awareness and understanding of commonly occurring diseases in general as well as specific conditions,” Dr. Ariyananda added.

Scheduled to open its doors to patients by June 2013, Hemas Hospitals Thalawathugoda will have the capability to treat 150,000 patients a year.
