Untitled-1For more than 70 years, Sri Lanka’s first Joint Commission International (JCI) approved hospital Durdans has been taking care of mothers and their babies at the specialised Maternity Care Centre. Most leading professional gynaecologists and obstetricians make visits to the hospital on a daily basis while many have their designated wards as well. Nursing staff that count for decades of experience are also on hand to ensure that the best pre and post natal care is given to all patients.

This Mother’s Day which fell on 8 May saw the birth of 12 newborns at the centre, which on average accounts for 180 deliveries per month. Under the guidance of Senior Medical Officer Dr. Agra Herath, eight nursing sisters and 25 nursing staff provide around-the-clock care, attention and education.

With two private labour rooms and luxury, super-deluxe and deluxe rooms with all modern conveniences to ensure comfort for pregnant mothers, newborns and their extended families. With the latest facilities for gynaecological and obstetric care, patients are sure to receive the best treatment they possibly can. A Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in addition to a highly specialised Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is available to handle any critical situation that may be faced by new born infants.

Durdans is also the only hospital in Sri Lanka that offers a labour pain epidural service. Epidurals are accepted the world over as the best and safest technique for normal delivery, with benefits to both mother and baby. Available 24/7 at the patient’s request, and is carried out by well-experienced consultants. It offers mothers a safe, comfortable and painless delivery at an affordable cost.

In the event of any obstetric or gynaecological emergency, the Durdans Maternity Care Centre also offers its registered patients a free walk-in consultation and assessment at any time of day without the obligation of admission. This is also a unique service offered only by Durdans Hospital.

Comprehensive paediatric care is also integrated into these services and associated with vaccination and screening programmes. Follow up care at the vaccination clinic refers newborns and mothers to their respective paediatricians and gynaecologists. Durdans also maintains the average stay in hospital on par with global standards, with patients leaving hospital two days after a normal delivery and two and a half days after a caesarean section.

Another unique feature Durdans offers is its tailor-made ‘Parent Craft Program’ which is a specially designed seminar for expecting parents in the third trimester. Held once a month for two hours in all three languages, this educational seminar is free of charge for all. Conducted by the in-house VOG and senior nursing staff the program is much sought after by young expecting couples.
