Eminent professionals on Golden Key Hospital’s Advisory Committee

The Golden Key Eye & ENT Hospital has announced the appointment of an Advisory Committee including leading medical professionals to assist in the management of the hospital and its further development.



Professor Rohan Jayasekara, Senior Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo, is Chairman of the Advisory Committee, which comprises of Dr. Saliya Pathirana, Dr. Saumya Paranavitana, Dr. Dilruwani Aryasingha, and the hospital’s Chief Operating Officer Niranjan Silva.

“The Golden Key Eye & ENT Hospital is the only private super-specialty category hospital in Sri Lanka, and the best-equipped facility in its field of expertise,” said COO and Advisory Committee Member Niranjan Silva. “It is therefore important that medical professionals play a key role in steering it to maximise its potential for the benefit of patients.”

The Committee’s Chairman Professor Rohan Jayasekara holds a doctorate in Human Genetics and counts over 38 years as an academic. A widely respected professional in the field of Medicine, Professor Jayasekera has extensive experience in management having chaired many Boards associated with medical administration and medical education. He is also the Medical Advisor to Ceylinco Healthcare Services Ltd., (CHSL).

Dr. Saliya Pathirana, Chief Consultant Eye Surgeon obtained his post graduate qualifications in Sri Lanka, Australia and England. He is considered a pioneer in introducing vitreoretinal surgery to both the state and private health sectors. A past president of the College of Ophthalmologists, Past Chairman of the Ophthalmologist Association of SAARC countries, Past Regional Secretary of the Asia – Pacific Ophthalmologists Association, a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmologists and member of the European Retina Society, Dr. Pathirana served as a member of the board of study in ophthalmology and was an examiner for the MS ophthalmology examination in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Saumya Paranavitana completed her post graduate training in Sri Lanka and the UK. She has developed a special interest in orthoptics (squint correction) and the diagnosis and treatment of related eye disorders. She is in charge of special clinics dealing with these problems in addition to practicing general ophthalmology at the hospital.

Dr. Dilruwani Aryasingha, a former Secretary to the College of Ophthalmologists, has won the Gold medal for best performance in MD Ophthalmology during her post graduate training.  Later she proceeded to the United Kingdom to gain further experience and also obtained her FRCS. Dr. Aryasingha has a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and is in charge of the Glaucoma Clinic.

A retired Naval Officer, Niranjan Silva joined Golden Key Hospital October 2010. During his 22 years in the Sri Lanka Navy, he underwent training in India, Pakistan, Israel, and Italy and attended conferences in Cyprus and Thailand.

A centre of excellence for eye and ENT related investigations, treatment and surgery; the Golden Key Eye & ENT Hospital is the only private facility in Sri Lanka where all eye-related investigations and treatment can be done under one roof. Tests such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA), Fundus Photography, GDX, A&B scans, as well as treatments such as photocoagulation laser and phacoemulsification surgery for cataracts are done routinely at the hospital.

At present it is the most advanced and only facility of its kind in the country. It is also the leading private medical facility in Sri Lanka to offer vitreoretinal surgery for problems such as retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage.

The hospital runs several full time specialty clinics for conditions such as glaucoma, squints, vitreoretinal problems, ocular plastics, uveitis and paediatric eye disorders and is the only specialty hospital that is open 24 hours a day.

In the area of ENT, the hospital has shown tremendous success with standard ENT surgeries like tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy as well as advanced head and neck surgery such as thyroidectomy. Its cochlear implant program has helped many young children to hear. State-of-the-art equipment is also available for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) done for nasal polyps and sinusitis.

The Golden Key Eye & ENT hospital has five operating theatres located on two floors. Two of them are ultra clean modular theatres, the first of their kind in the private sector. One of each is dedicated to the two specialties eye and ENT. Of the other three theatres, two are for general and casualty eye surgery while the other is an emergency ENT theatre. The theatres are equipped with the highest grade Carl Zeiss surgical microscopes and high-tech surgery recording facilities that enable the surgeons to record their surgeries for future reference.

The hospital has an Intensive Care Unit that is fully equipped to handle any patient needing post-operative intensive or high dependency care. In addition 17 single rooms, 23 beds in two or three bed mini ward units and 10 day care beds for patients who come in for single day procedures such as cataract surgery, make up total bed strength of 44.
