Under the program ‘A workplace free of garbage,’ the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government initiated a special program to check all Government and private institutions for dengue breeding sites. This program was started yesterday from the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government.
The Chief Medical Officer of Health of the CMC Doctor Ruwan Wijayamuni and a group of Public Health Inspectors inspected all the buildings and the Ministry premises.
The Paddy Marketing Board, Food Commissioner’s Department and Department of Cooperative Development were also inspected. During the inspection, a dengue mosquito breeding site was found in the premises of the Paddy Marketing Board.
Addressing the media after the inspection, Musthapha said: “This is a first step for a huge transformation in the prevailing dengue crisis. Most of the times, an innocent person is charged with the offence of having a dengue breeding site in his land. We have changed that attitude. Legal action can be taken against the head of any institution which is found guilty of having a dengue mosquito breeding site. If not there will be no end to this dengue crisis.”
Under the program ‘A workplace free of garbage,’ all Government and private institutions should clean their surroundings and destroy mosquito breeding sites. Then under the supervision of public health inspectors all those areas will be made dengue free zones.
This program will be coordinated by the Special Task Force established for the Management of Waste by the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government. The group of PHIs at the Colombo Municipal Council is dedicated to assist in all these activities.
