FORTE international Sri Lanka, together with Global Hospitals, announced yesterday that Sri Lankan singer Namal Udugama underwent a successful liver transplant at Global Hospital, India.
Udugama’s condition was being treated in Sri Lanka but in February 2015 it drastically deteriorated and he was kept under close observation in the ICU. With a liver transplant being his only option, he chose Global Health City for further medical treatment.
Addressing the media in Colombo Global Health City HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery Senior Consultant Dr. Gomathy Narasimhan said: “Upon his arrival at our hospital, he was completely evaluated by our liver transplant team and was subsequently advised to undergo a liver transplant. The one good thing about Namal’s case was that no time was wasted in getting support for the liver transplant procedure.”
She added that the liver transplant team, spearheaded by Professor. Mohamed Rela, immediately swung into action and performed the procedure successfully. Udugama has recovered fast and is now in the ward. He is expected to be discharged during the next few days.
“Our understanding with local doctors is growing very well. Earlier patients used to come too far gone but now, with the help of local doctors, patients understand the importance of liver transplantations, they understand the outcome. Around 27 patients from Sri Lanka have undergone transplants with us including children and adults. Last month we operated on five patients from Sri Lanka,” she added.
Speaking at the occasion Udugama’s daughter stated: “My father was not in a good condition. We never thought of a liver transplant surgery and last year he was in a critical situation and decided to go for further treatment and chose Global Hospitals in India.”
“Before going to India he was very week, now my father is very confident after his surgery and we are very happy to see it” she added.
Forte Group of Companies Chairman M.F.A. Riyas said: “The story of this singer says it all. After having undergone a successful liver transplant procedure a few weeks ago, he is now all set to rock the world with his voice again.
