Germany helps victims of landmines

The German Government has granted Rs. 18 million in support of the victims of landmines in the North of Sri Lanka.

The project will be implemented by the Johanniter International Assistance Organisation and consists of several components including the purchase of 75 wheelchairs and the material for 185 prostheses which will benefit 260 victims of landmines.

In addition, the beneficiaries will receive practical training in operating their wheelchairs as well as psycho-social support in order to cope with their mental and physical injuries.

German Ambassador Dr. Morhard expressed his hope that this project would make a meaningful contribution to the victims of landmines and help them to re-integrate into society and become economically independent.

He said: “These victims’ lives have been turned upside down by their devastating experiences and their wounds will never completely heal, but I trust that this project will help them to cope and to lead successful lives.”
