Hemas Hospitals announces new Managing Director, Group Medical Director

Hemas Hospitals Ltd., yesterday announced the appointments of Panjan Navaratnam as Managing Director and Dr. Panna Gooneratne as Group Medical Director for its chain of hospitals. The Hemas Hospitals chain includes three full-scope, multi-specialty hospitals at Wattala, Thalawathugoda and Galle with six diagnostic centres in the Gampaha district. Navaratnam will oversee the operational integration of the Wattala, Galle and Thalawathugoda hospitals and play a key role in ensuring the expansion of the hospital’s market share while strengthening the medical and healthcare services to international levels. Dr. Gooneratne’s experience as a consultant heart surgeon, his many roles in the medical and healthcare arena in Sri Lanka and overseas will help the clinical governance and performance of the hospital’s medical services. “We are pleased to make these senior appointments which is an important step in positioning the hospitals to explore a range of opportunities that will prepare us for the future and in achieving our vision of being the most respected healthcare provider in the country,” said Hemas Hospitals Executive Chairman Murtaza Esufally. Bringing over 25 years of international and national experience, Navaratnam joined Hemas Hospitals from Standards Australia, the premier Australian standardisation body, based in Sydney, where he held a variety of roles, the last being head of Standards Development Services Operations. His experience covers mentoring, leading and managing high performance operations teams, having worked in the US too. Navaratnam joined Hemas Hospitals 10 months ago as its Chief Operating Officer. Consultant Cardio-thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Panna Gooneratne has been in a clinician for over 40 years and is an acclaimed specialist heart surgeon, having carried out many firsts in delicate surgeries in new born. Murtaza Esufally will continue to be actively involved in the hospitals, as the Executive Chairman The multi-chain hospitals have over 1,000 employees in their facilities and are now entering a critical phase of expansion.
