Aralaganwila, in Polonnaruwa District, is a rural farming community of about 100,000 persons. It went through difficult times during the past few decades. The health needs of the population are looked after by the Divisional Hospital, Aralaganwila, which was opened in 1968 as a central dispensary and handled by an apothecary during the time of C.P. De Silva. It has now developed into a 32 bed divisional hospital, with two medical officers, nurses and support staff and has an average monthly attendance of about 6,800 OPD patients and 1,000 clinic patients. A dire need of this hospital was an ETU, where prompt life saving attention could be given to patients with snake bites, poisoning (both accidental and suicide), traumatic injuries, severe asthma and even elephant attacks. Hemas Pharmaceuticals Ltd., which is the leading distributor of pharmaceuticals and surgical products in Sri Lanka, undertook and successfully completed the task of constructing an ETU at a cost of over Rs. 4 million. The Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) was formally opened by Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena on 16 July, with the participation of provincial health officials, people’s representatives, Hemas Pharmaceutical representatives and a large local gathering. Speaking on the occasion, Hemas Pharmaceuticals Managing Director Sanjeewa Samaranayake emphasised that Hemas is a 100% Sri Lankan company which always contributes towards improving the standards of health in Sri Lanka. The Minister in his address, while thanking Hemas Pharmaceuticals, stressed the fact that Sri Lanka provides a free health service which is much better in quality than most other countries in the region. Hemas Pharmaceuticals is a subsidiary of Hemas Holdings PLC, a diversified conglomerate with a focus on five key sectors, namely, Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Healthcare, Leisure, Transportation and Power Generation.
