Lanka Hospitals observed World Diabetes Day on 10 November in a grand scale, giving the general public of Sri Lanka the much needed awareness on Diabetes Mellitus prevention and management. Taking in to consideration the timely intervention as a responsible and pro-active internationally accredited healthcare provider, Lanka Hospitals carried out a public service on educating the masses of Sri Lanka on the prevention and management of diabetes in the form of an exhibition/free health clinic/consultant interaction forum.
Diabetes is known as the world’s fastest growing disease today. According to the Diabetes Association of Sri Lanka, 2.1 million Sri Lankans live with diabetes while more than 422 million people around the world are contracted by the disease at present (WHO).
More than 500 individuals who visited Lanka Hospitals on 10 November benefited from the free health screening that included BMI, blood sugar monitoring, advice from a medical officer and a dietician as well as from the opportunity to interact with Sri Lanka’s renowned consultant endocrinologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, neurologists, ophthalmologists, general physicians, vascular surgeons, dieticians and physiotherapists all free of charge. The forum was a rare mix of highly recognised and respected bevy of medical practitioners in the country and patients/ participants of the day could freely discuss their concerns on all aspects related to diabetes prevention and management as well as related illnesses.
During the event, well- known consultant doctors delivered lectures in interactive sessions while Educational exhibition stalls were open for the public to enrich their knowledge on the trends, dangers, prevention and management of Diabetes Mellitus. The day-long event was a strong testimony on Lanka Hospitals’ commitment to empower and serve the general public with medical education in order to foster a healthier nation.
