Mozammel Huq Bhuiyan has been infected by the Hepatitis C virus since 1996. Over time, his situation became worse and he was diagnosed with end-stage liver failure. In 2011, he travelled to Singapore to undergo Living Donor Liver Transplant surgery with Dr. K.C. Tan at Gleneagles Hospital, which was a success. “I used to feel very weak, giddy, dizzy and disoriented most of the time before the transplant. I also had nausea and appetite loss,” said Bhuiyan. “But after the transplant, I feel stronger. No more weakness or any other symptoms. I even gained 10 kg of weight!”
Bhuiyan explained that he chose to come to Singapore for his treatment as the Living Donor Liver Transplant procedure was not available in Bangladesh. “I consulted various Hepatologists and Hepatobiliary Surgeons in Bangladesh. Most of them advised me to go to India for affordable treatment. However, I came to know of the Asian Centre for Liver Diseases and Transplantation (ACLDT) from the Parkway Pantai Patient Assistance Centre in Dhaka. The team at the Dhaka office made me understand that my life could be renewed if I received treatment at Gleneagles Hospital. With knowledge of the technological advances and superior facilities and expertise, I decided to visit ACLDT at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore.” “Treatment and care is faster and better with world class expertise and advanced technologies but with a touch of humanity. Nursing is remarkable,” said Bhuiyan of his experience at Gleneagles Hospital.
Thanks to advancements in medicine, science and technology, there is now new hope for patients with end-stage liver disease, particularly patients with acute liver failure, liver cancer and Hepatitis C. Patients are now able to take advantage of the Living Donor Liver Transplant procedure, as chances of survival for this technique have improved over the years.
