Opening of Wetlab at Eye Hospital, Colombo to commemorate World Sight Day

Sri Lanka’s first Wetlab at a government institute was inaugurated at the Eye hospital, Colombo to commemorate World Sight Day on 10 October, 2013
This Wetlab was inaugurated by Eye Hospital Director Dr. M.Y.K. Wilfred and chief guest Health Ministry of Sri Lanka Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala.
College of Ophthalmologists Sri Lanka President and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr. Ranjith Kodikara, and Association of Vitreo Retina Specialists Council member and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr. Charith Fonseka, were instrumental in spear heading this project and getting it off ground.
The Wetlab facility which was opened at the Eye Hospital is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka and is supported by the leading Eye Care Company, Alcon which is a part of the Novartis Company. Alcon provided the Infiniti Phaco Machine which is the latest in cutting edge technology for cataract surgery, microscope and all other instruments and accessories required to conduct the training.
This centre will provide doctors the training required to perform cataract surgery on artificial and animal eyes and learn the finer techniques of the art of cataract surgery.
Until recently the only facility for Wetlab training was provided for at the Alcon office premises at Delmege Forsyth & Co. Ltd.
Alcon Sri Lanka and Maldives Country Manager Chanaka Goonetilleke said: “We at Alcon are proud to be able to work in collaboration with the College of Ophthalmologists and the Association for Vitreo-Retina specialists, Sri Lanka and take this opportunity to provide continuous support in the latest innovations in training and development of the future generation of ophthalmologists.”
