President discusses national program for cancer treatment

The attention of the Government has been drawn to implement a broad national program to provide assistance for the treatment of cancer patients’ treatments and to find solutions to problems faced by the cancer patients.

A detailed discussion was held in this regard, when the members of the Sri Lanka Cancer Specialists Association met President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s official residence last week.

The President implemented many programs as the then Minister of Health for the welfare of the cancer patients and those programs were halted in midway by the then Government.

“As a Government we will take every possible step for the welfare of the cancer patients,” the President further said.

During this discussion, attention was paid to establishing of institutes for specialised treatments for cancer patients, implementing a new project for bone marrow transplants, providing of high technological ex-ray machines in the cancer prevention centres island-wide.

They also discussed the progress of the program to establish cancer institute in every district and appoint specialist doctors to those institutes. The President inquired about the performance of the cancer institute which has been established in Jaffna for the cancer affected people in the North.

The Association of Specialist Doctors presented a set of suggestions to the President for the success of treatment of cancer patients.
