SLT supports building of Emergency and Trauma Unit at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the Super Platinum Sponsor of the Batticaloa Emergency and Accident Project (BEAP), re-affirmed its commitment towards the next phase of the project’s development by handing over the company’s contribution towards the project at a special ceremony held at the company’s premises recently. The mock cheque was handed over to the Foundation Supporting a National Trauma Service President Dr. David Young by SLT Chief Corporate Officer S.K. Lal Ranjith. The Batticaloa Teaching Hospital Project envisions to upgrade the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital with a full-fledged emergency and trauma unit with the capacity to cater to the large population of people in the region. This project will transform the Teaching Hospital Batticaloa into a fully equipped hospital with modern facilities and equipment including a modern emergency reception area, accident evaluation facility, three well equipped operating theatres, assessment rooms, recovery rooms, ward facilities for 100 beds (male/female), adequate staff, storage facilities etc. SLT and the Foundation Supporting a National Trauma Service in Sri Lanka entered into an agreement to be the Super Platinum Sponsor of the project. The project is partly funded by corporates such as SLT as well as other donors while the balance is funded by the Government of Sri Lanka.

“We are glad for this opportunity to contribute towards this noble cause,” said Ranjith, commenting on SLT’s partnership with the Foundation for the BEAP Project. “This is a much felt need in the Batticaloa area to enable the hospital to cater to the large amount of requirements of the area and we are looking forward to the laying of the foundation stone. As a large corporate entity, it is our responsibility to give towards the community in any way we can. We encourage other corporates as well to join in and give and their support towards this endeavour.” Foundation CEO Nihal de Run commented, “The Foundation Supporting a National Trauma Service in Sri Lanka is very pleased to receive this second tranche of funding from Sri Lanka Telecom, who are the Super Platinum sponsors of the BEAP project. This contribution brings us closer to achieving our goal to construct a three-storey, three theatre, emergency and accident facility within the premises of the Teaching Hospital in Batticaloa. We are making every effort to have the foundation stone laid for the commencement of the construction by end May 2015. “The Foundation will then focus on raising funds to equip the hospital with modern medical equipment and arrange training to support the Ministry of Health in the management and administration of this much needed emergency and accident facility.
