With world class tertiary care hospitals at Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and now in Mumbai, Global Hospitals has been demonstrating its highest quality of clinical services by successfully treating many paediatric patients from Sri Lanka with a wide variety of health complications.
Professor Mohamed Rela, one of the world’s foremost liver transplantation surgeons and also the Head and Chief Surgeon – HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery at the Global Hospitals Group, was invited as a Speaker at the Principal Symposium on Liver Transplantation at the 13th Scientific session of Commonwealth Associations of Paediatric Gastro-enterology and Nutrition.
Preferred healthcare destination
Addressing the esteemed members of the media on the occasion of his visit to Sri Lanka, Professor Mohamed Rela, said, “India is emerging as a preferred healthcare destination primarily for living donor liver transplantation, as the success rates are proving to be better than that of the West. Patients from South East Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and also from African and Middle East nations are now placing their confidence in the quality of services and positive outcomes that we are delivering.”
Prof. Rela further added, “We have had instances of sick patients, both children and adults with end-stage conditions being airlifted from Sri Lanka, who have successfully undergone liver transplants. As clinical outcomes/successes are directly related to the condition of the patient, it’s important for the patients to undergo treatment as early as possible so that recovery is better. Physicians who are treating patients with liver diseases should identify early, the conditions that warrant a transplant and refer them for a transplant so that complications are less.”
Associated with Prof. Rela were Drs. Naresh and Gomathy, as well as Chairman of the Forte Group (local representatives of Global Hospitals), M.F.A. Riyas.
To date over 300 Sri Lankans have visited Global Hospitals. A few Sri Lankan patients, with complex liver disease have also undergone both paediatric as well as adult liver transplantations. In this spectrum, Global Hospitals is undoubtedly the preferred destination for Live Donor Liver Transplantation, Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation, Hepato biliary Surgery and Pancreatic Surgery, to name just a few.
Super Specialists (including for Paediatrics) from Global Hospitals, have been working closely with the fraternity of Specialists in Sri Lanka, establishing a strong bond, to further enhance the quality and safety of paediatric health care in Sri Lanka. Consistently collaborating on continuous medical educations programs, as well as taking part in Scientific Symposiums and in workshops, Super Specialists from Global Hospitals have been actively contributing towards raising the bar of quality of healthcare in Sri Lanka in required areas.
Global Hospitals Group runs a University Approved Liver Transplant Surgery Fellowship, the first in the country, started in 2012, and is a University Approved HPB Surgery Fellowship.
Global Hospitals Group is a multi-super specialty, tertiary care hospital chain with India’s largest multi-organ transplant centre for liver, heart, lung, kidney transplantations supported by world class infrastructure, state of the art technology and a strong commitment to deliver exceptional patient care.
Global Health City, Chennai, the closest Global Hospitals’ centre for Sri Lanka, has been consistently performing, successfully, a large number of complex liver surgeries and transplantations on both adult as well as paediatric patients.
The Institute of Liver, Pancreatic Diseases and Transplantation does both Live Donor and Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation. Since 2009 up to September 2013, the Institute has performed over 440 successful Liver Transplantations, besides significant numbers of HPB Surgeries like Hepatectomies, Whipple’s Procedures, Shunt Procedures and Bile duct Strictures.
“Liver disease can even affect new born babies. The size and weight of the baby is not a contraindication for liver transplant. Even a baby as young as four months old and weighing a mere 4 kg has been successfully transplanted at Global Hospitals. Some Liver tumours are common in children and these tumours, if appropriately treated with chemotherapy and surgical resection, could have a long time survival rate of around 95%. Even in children where surgical resection is not possible, liver transplants can be performed safely with a long term good outcome. It’s always essential that paediatric patients seek specialist medical attention as early as possible which would help in better outcomes,” said Prof. Rela.
